The FCC has released its Report on Parental Control Technologies (attached to this post), as required by the Child Safe Viewing Act of 2008. We are still digesting the 96-page report and will offer several posts to help our readers break it down. But a couple of points are immediately clear:
1) "The Commission intends to issue a further Notice of Inquiry to explore these issues and others related to the goal of protecting children and empowering parents in the digital age. (pg 4)" So there will be another round of comments and input.
2) The reason that there will be another NOI is that the FCC -- and specifically the new leadership at the FCC - did not get the answers that they were looking for. In particular, we dont think they got the data that they were looking for. Which follows the point that we have been making all along. The world of ratings and parental controls is an emerging market about which we know very little. It is time for this new industry to be taken seriously -- and part of that means moving into accurate data. In this respect (and in many others) we support the direction of the new FCC leadership
