Internet Safety: Social Networking Sites

With the use of social networking sites becoming more commonplace among youth, parents are becoming more concerned about what—and who—their children are being exposed to. With that in mind, Common Sense Media has conducted a comparative analysis of some of the more popular social networking sites. But one Illinois congressman wants parents to be aware of another not-so-well-known site. U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk has called for a consumer alert warning on Second Life, social networking site where users assume characters known as avatars and can play, date, and do business in a 3-D world that resembles a video game. Kirk believes that this virtual world is an emerging danger for children, who can be easy targets for sexual predators. See this article from the Chicago Tribune to learn more about Kirk’s concerns about Second Life.
