China Declares Internet Addiction a Mental Disorder

Amid growing concerns by Chinese health officials that young people are becoming addicted to the Internet, China has declared Internet Addiction a clinical disorder.  The UK’s Daily Mail reports that Beijing doctors have released a diagnostic definition of Internet Addiction:

Based on a study of more than 1,300 problematic users, symptoms of the addiction include yearning to get back online, mental or physical distress, irritation and difficulty concentrating or sleeping.

Upon this announcement, the family of a 22-year-old Chinese man who poisoned his parents have applied for a mental illness appraisal. The family claims that the man was addicted to the online game Legend, a game where players can buy virtual weapons with real money. The man's parents gave him money to help support his business, but he spent all of it on the game.
